Providence Bridge Pedal: A Celebration of Portland, cycling and Willamette River bridges
Sunday, August 11th: A Celebration of Portland, Cycling and Willamette River Bridges
For nearly 30 years, the second Sunday in August has given cyclists the unique opportunity to experience many of Portland’s iconic bridges, including the Fremont and Marquam bridges, traffic-free!
It’s time for the annual Providence Bridge Pedal!
Featuring 3 different distance options, ranging from the 13-mile “Family Route” to the 23-mile “Fremont Express” the Providence Bridge Pedal has a route for every rider.
Catch the sunrise (6:08am) from the Fremont bridge while you enjoy the light pre-ride breakfast provided for Fremont Express riders before the route opens at 7am. There’s a 3-mile “Kids Pedal” that’s free for the youngest cyclists (and their accompanying adult supervision) to enjoy the same safe ride on car-free streets! Kid’s pedal participants and all youth who tackle the 13-mile “Six Bridge Challenge” will receive a medal upon completion to celebrate their achievements!
If you don’t bike (are you really a Portlander then!?) there’s a 5-mile Bridge Stride walk that crosses the Fremont and Steel bridges and still provides the same car-free community experience.
Bike mechanics and mechanical support will be available along the ride, should you get a flat tire or other unexpected issue, but the Bridge Pedal recommends all riders check their bikes for safety and functionality before riding. This gives you the best chance at having an enjoyable experience, and not a frustrating fight with fussy shifters. Portland has MANY local bike shops that are happy to help get you tuned up and ready to ride! Find your Local Bike Shop Here
Helmets are required for all riders, and while e-bikes are welcome, organizers would like to remind riders that this is a social ride, not a race. Please be mindful of others and use motors only when necessary, especially for the family-friendly routes where speeds may be slower.
Skateboards and electric scooters are NOT allowed on this ride.
This is a great opportunity for the whole family to get out and enjoy many of Portland’s best features and spend time being active together.
Our front desk bike enthusiast will be out of town during this splendid event, but she hopes to live vicariously through other folks’ pleasure in this two-wheeled street takeover of I-405!
Allez!
