It’s that time of the year: time to donate to Pixie Project! This is one of our favorite local non-profits to support, and judging by the volume of donations we usually receive, it’s a patient favorite too!
The Pixie Project provides low-cost veterinary services to help keep pets in loving homes and prevent owners from surrendering their beloved companions due to financial hardship. The shelter and adoption arm of Pixie Project focuses on finding life-long matches between pet and adopter. Their adoption process is more in-depth than most adoption facilities, ensuring that the match is one that will benefit the needs of the humans and pets involved.
The Pixie Project’s adoptable animals come from a variety of places but the majority are from over-crowded surrounding shelters, or rescues located in more rural areas of Oregon. As many of these areas are not served by a local shelter Pixie Project provides an urban outlet where the animals can have maximum visibility and exposure to potential adopters. Animals that come to Pixie Project also have access to veterinary and training support.
Important Messages for 2022
The last couple of years have brought changes to all of us, even Pixie Project. This is the busiest Pixie Project as ever been. Here’s what they have to say about how the pandemic is affecting local animals and pet owners:
“Most of the shelters and rescues are still offering reduced services or have eliminated programs all together. The city/county shelter hasn't taken most stray cats in two years, it's almost impossible to find a rescue that's providing community dog spay/neuter, and other shelters are not providing even basic veterinary care to their adoptable animals. When new adopters realize they can't afford the required treatments/surgeries/medications, the other shelters give out Pixie's number as the solution.”
Additionally, many vet clinics are still operating at limited capacities and are not accepting new clients. With no where else to turn, new pet owners call Pixie Project. Pixie receives a couple dozen calls or emails every week from people who have just adopted a cat or dog that needs immediate dental care, skin treatment, diagnostics, medications, etc. Pixie says:
“We're trying to be the safety net for the pets and people who aren't getting help anywhere else, but it's been an extra tough couple of months!”
During the month of May 2022 Equilibrium will match in-office financial donations and collect material donations from the below list for Pixie Project. For more information, visit Pixie Project’s website. On their website you can also donate directly to Pixie Project. Other donation options include purchasing items from their Amazon wishlist or Chewy wishlist — these items will be sent directly to Pixie Project.
We asked Pixie what their greatest needs are and here are the priorities:
Canned cat and dog food (any size/brand/flavor--we go through a ton of it!),
Fleece blankets (any size, even the little throws are great),
Chewy dog treats (bully sticks, pigs ears, etc),
Paper towels
