We’re excited to announce that Dr. Cydney recently became certified in Webster Technique: a specific chiropractic sacral analysis and diversified adjustment. This adjustment aims to reduce the effects of sacroiliac (SI) joint dysfunction to facilitate the neuro-biomechanical function of the pelvis.
What do all of those words mean? The SI joint is the point at which the pelvic bones (iliacus) and the sacrum meet. The sacrum is a triangular bone near the base of the spine formed of fused vertebra. It sits right in between your hip bones on the back of your body. The SI joint is the meeting place of spine and hips, and is woven with nerves, so you can see to see how this joint is important, and can be problematic.
The SI joint is a shock absorber for the spine, and it converts torque from the lower body into the rest of the body. Activities we take for granted in our day-to-day lives like walking, standing up, and transitioning between laying, sitting, and standing are all facilitated by the SI joint as our body weight is shifted. Dysfunction in the SI joint can be a contributing factor to low back pain, hip pain, and sciatica. Lifestyle factors like weight-lifting, pregnancy, or carrying heavy loads (baby-carrying, backpacking, etc.) can present challenges for the SI joint to remain stable and supportive.
Applications of Webster Technique
While the applications of Webster Technique are myriad, it originated to aid to safer and easier births, and is still known best as a technique for pregnancy. As detailed in our blog about chiropractic and pregnancy, chiropractic treatment has been shown to have a beneficial correlation with labor duration and difficulty. Webster Technique focuses on stabilizing the sacrum and SI joint for improved function. This may assist with optimal positioning of the baby. Alignment of the pelvic region can help the related muscles loosen so that the baby has more freedom of movement to properly position itself.
Outside of pregnancy, Webster Technique can be helpful for anyone who is suffering from pain or stiffness in the sacrum, and is an effective treatment for low back pain and sciatica. Especially for patients who perform weight-bearing activities like those mentioned above.
